Patterns & Products

What is the difference between punch needle and rug hooking patterns?

Punch needle and rug hooking are two distinct fiber art techniques, and our patterns are designed specifically for each. Our punch needle patterns are designed for artists who use a fine punch needle tool with thread, worked on weaver's cloth fabric. They come in three formats: paper, PDF, and printed directly on the weaver's cloth. Our rug hooking patterns are designed for both rug hooking artists using wool strips and a rug hook, and rug punch needle artists using yarn. These patterns come in three formats: paper, PDF, and hand-drawn on linen. Always choose the pattern labeled for your technique, as they are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between paper, linen, and PDF patterns?

Orphaned Wool patterns come in several formats to suit different preferences and workflows.

Punch Needle Patterns:

  • Paper or PDF — The design is printed (or downloaded and printed at home) and then traced onto your own weavers' cloth fabric before punching.
  • Printed on Weavers Cloth — The design is printed directly onto the fabric, so you can start punching right away with no tracing needed.

Rug Hooking Patterns:

  • Paper or PDF — The design is printed (or downloaded and printed at home), enlarged to your preferred size, and then traced onto your preferred foundation fabric. PDF and paper patterns include suggestions for enlargement sizes to guide you.
  • Hand-Drawn on Linen — The design is drawn by hand onto linen backing, ready to hook with no tracing or enlargement needed.

All formats include a full-color placement guide and complete thread information.

Do your patterns come with instructions?

Yes! Every Orphaned Wool pattern includes everything you need to get started. All patterns include a full-color thread or wool/yarn placement guide. Rug hooking patterns (paper and PDF) also include size suggestions for enlargement, recommended uses, and a copyright permission slip for up to 3 enlargements. Punch needle patterns include technique tips, full thread information (including thread type, colors, and amounts), and punching directions.

Are your patterns suitable for beginners?

Yes! Orphaned Wool has patterns suitable for all skill levels. We offer many designs that are perfect for beginners, as well as patterns that work for all levels of experience. Our beginner punch needle section includes a free pattern to help you get started, and our Punch Needle Library and Rug Hooking Library are full of tutorials and tips to support crafters at every stage of their journey.

Getting Started

What materials do I need to get started with punch needle?

To get started with punch needle, you'll need a fine punch needle tool, weavers' cloth fabric, and embroidery thread. At Orphaned Wool, we offer beginner-friendly punch needle patterns that include detailed information to help you get started with confidence. We also offer a free beginner punch needle pattern to get you started. Digital Downloads

How do I download my digital pattern, and can I print it at home?

After completing your purchase, you'll receive an email with a download link for your digital pattern. PDF patterns are designed to be printed at home on standard letter-size paper and include a full-color color placement guide. Rug hooking PDF patterns will need to be enlarged before use — enlargement size suggestions are included with your pattern to guide you. Once printed, punch needle PDF patterns are traced onto your own weavers' cloth fabric, and rug hooking PDF patterns are traced onto your preferred foundation fabric after enlargement.
