My Favorite Threads for Punch Needle Embroidery
Punch Needle Embroidery Threads | Orphaned Wool
My Favorite Threads for Punch Needle Embroidery:
- DMC Floss
- DMC Eco-Vita Wool Thread
- Valdani Thread (size #12 & 3-strand rolls)
- Rustic Moire Wool Thread
Choosing the right thread is essential to creating beautiful punch needle embroidery. Different fibers produce distinct textures and finishes. Below, I share the threads I use most often in my Orphaned Wool punch needle designs, along with some information about each type and the finish they create.
Whether you prefer cotton or wool, or a little sheen or a matte finish, experimenting with these thread types might help you discover a new personal favorite.
DMC Floss
DMC Floss is made in France and is a widely available 6-strand cotton embroidery thread available in over 500 colors. It is a more economical thread with a soft sheen and is a popular choice for punch needle embroidery.
For my designs, I use the smallest needle in my punch needle and separate the DMC Floss into 3 strands for finer detail, or into 2 strands when I want to combine two different colors, for a total of 4 strands. Separating the 6 strands in half creates a finer, more detailed finish, but it is ultimately a matter of personal preference in how you like to work and the finish you enjoy.
Helpful Tip: I use my Quick Split Clip to divide strands easily. I will not work without using this clip when dividing any 6-strand threads; it makes dividing strands so much quicker, a real time saver. This tool is available on my website, Orphanedwool.com, in the punch needle supplies section.
DMC Eco-Vita 100% Wool Thread

DMC Eco-Vita is a naturally dyed, 100% wool embroidery thread manufactured in Italy and released in 2024. It is used as a single strand and fills beautifully because of the natural loft of wool fibers.
This thread creates a soft, matte finish that gives punch needle embroidery a tapestry-like appearance. While more expensive than cotton floss, it requires less thread to fill a design. I love how the finish of this thread reminds me of a miniature hooked rug. This thread, along with others, can now be easily found online.
Valdani Threads - Size # 8, 12, and 3 Strand rolls
Valdani threads are manufactured in Romania and distributed from Canada. They are available in multiple formats, including Perle Cotton sizes 5, 8, and 12, as well as continuous 3-strand rolls. I especially enjoy using Valdani Perle Cotton size 12 and Valdani 3-strand rolls. The continuous rolls eliminate the need for strand separation, reducing re-threading time and making the punching process a little more efficient. They are slightly more expensive than DMC Floss and not as easy to find locally, but they are easy to find online.
Tip: Using two different thread types in the same design can work beautifully. For example, I have used Valdani Thread size #12 roll for the background of a pattern, and DMC Floss skeins for the other design elements.
Rustic Moire Wool Threads

Rustic Moire threads are 100% wool, manufactured in Spain, and come on wooden spools. They are continuous strands that require no separation and have a slightly coarse texture.
These threads create a natural, matte finish that works beautifully in punch needle embroidery with a rustic or organic style. They are typically purchased online and may be harder to find locally.
There is no single “best” thread for punch needle embroidery. These are the threads I prefer and have designed with. Your choice depends on your design, personal preference, finish type, availability, and budget. Mixing thread types and experimenting with solid and variegated colors can dramatically change the look and feel of a finished piece. Trying different fibers is an enjoyable part of punch needle embroidery — and often leads to unexpected and beautiful results. So have fun, trust your instincts, and let the thread guide your creativity. Each choice you make adds character and depth to your work, making every piece uniquely your own.
